Plunkett was working with tetrafluoroethylene (TFE) gas, which was stored in small cylinders. One day, when he went to use a cylinder of TFE, he noticed that the gas was not flowing as expected. Instead of being disappointed, Plunkett’s scientific curiosity was piqued. He decided to investigate what had happened inside the cylinder.
He cut open the cylinder and found that the TFE gas had polymerized into a white, waxy solid. This solid was PTFE, a completely new and unexpected substance. Plunkett and his colleagues at DuPont immediately recognized the potential of this new material. They began to conduct a series of tests to understand its properties.
One of the most remarkable properties of PTFE is its non – stick nature. This is due to the strong carbon – fluorine bonds in its chemical structure.
